What is AI?
This explainer is part of SAVI School. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is software that finds patterns in information. Some AI can answer questions, generate text or images, summarise ideas and suggest feedback. It does not think, understand or care in the way a person does, even when its answers sound confident and human.
How might SAVI use it?
SAVI may use AI to help explain a topic, create practice activities, suggest feedback or help our team improve learning content and support. People remain responsible for how these tools are used. AI must not make final safeguarding or other important decisions about you.
A feature should make it clear when you are interacting with AI. You can ask for human help if an answer is confusing, worrying or seems unfair.
AI can be wrong
AI sometimes invents facts, quotations, sources or calculations. It can repeat bias found in its training information and may not know about recent events. Before relying on an answer:
- check it against your course materials and trustworthy sources;
- ask where the information came from and verify the source yourself;
- work through calculations rather than copying the result; and
- ask a teacher or trusted adult when something is important or uncertain.
Keep personal information private
Do not put passwords, payment details, your address, private health information, safeguarding details or someone else's secrets into an AI prompt. What you type may be stored or processed by the company providing the tool.
Use fictional details if you need an example. If you accidentally share something sensitive, stop and tell a trusted adult. You can also contact us using the details below.
Use AI honestly
AI should help you learn, not do all the thinking for you. Follow your school's and exam board's rules. Do not submit AI-generated work as your own, use it during a test when it is not allowed, or use it to impersonate, bully or deceive someone. If AI helped with an assignment, say so in the way your teacher asks.
If something worries you
Stop the conversation and tell a trusted adult if AI shows sexual, violent, hateful or upsetting content, asks you to keep secrets, encourages dangerous behaviour, or makes you feel unsafe. Do not follow AI advice in an emergency. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
